English

Effect of elevated-temperature homogenization on the microstructure and formability of as-cast Mg-Zn alloy with 5 wt.% Zn was investigated. The average grain size of the as-cast alloy was 77 µm, which was coarsened to ~82 µm upon homogenizing. Despite grain growth, the hardness of the as-cast and homogenized samples was determined as 46.7 and 63.4 HV, respectively. The increase in hardness was related to the more pronounced solid solution effect of Zn in α-Mg, which was confirmed based on the elemental analysis, in such a way that Zn content in the matrix for the as-cast and homogenized samples was determined as 0.56 and 4.06 wt.%, respectively. Tensile testing revealed that, despite larger grain size, the increased Zn content in the matrix resulted in the improved mechanical properties after homogenizing, where the total elongation was doubled and the yield stress and the ultimate tensile strength slightly increased. On the other hand, the hardening exponent of the Hollomon equation for the homogenized sample was determined as 0.35, showing a major improvement compared to the as-cast counterpart with the hardening exponent of 0.27, which is consistent with the improved formability of the Mg-Zn alloy upon homogenizing.
